Should i have kids?

Familial multiple lipomatosis is a rare disease. With this condition you get multiple lipomas (dozens or hundreds) all over your body. Lipomas are usually encapsulated.

Should i have kids?

Post by BenMoro » Fri May 22, 2015 12:25 pm

Hi,

I have FML, which is a hereditary syndrome (My dad has ~4 of them, i have >40). I am in my mid 30's and thinking of getting married. but i started thinking seriously about the morality of having kids while i know they will be at a high risk to develop the syndrome.

What do you guys think about this? will you take the risk and build a family, or enjoy the remaining of your days kids free?

Hi as far as defects go fml isn't that bad if you feel happy in life even though you have this problem what's to stop your kids living happy lives? I have fml too and although I used to think about my problem a lot i now rarely think about it and my girlfriend doesn't care in the slightest about it. Basically if you want kids have kids.

I actually went to a geneticist about this. She looked it up in her database and basically said that there is about a 50% chance; HOWEVER, it has a variable rate of expression. I unfortunately am peppered with these things, and my older brother only has six or so, but there is no other trace of lipomas in the family as far as anyone knows. Did it skip generations? Who knows....

My wife and I have a 17 month girl who I love with all my heart. I do worry about her getting lipomas one day, especially since I think it would be much more difficult to deal with as a female, but how many great things in life do people pass up on because of fear. Many times this fear never even comes to fruition.

Plus, I'm hopeful that there will be better treatment options in a couple decades from now.

Just my thoughts....

Hi all!

I noticed that there are no recent comments on this thread but I wonder if there are more thoughts on this topic within the community. I am overwhelmed with making the decision whether to have kids or not. If I am informed correctly, FML could be caused by a (balanced) chromosome translocation which could cause problems such as miscarriages but also problems in the offspring. Please correct me if you have other information regarding potential risks of FML for pregnancies.

I would be interested how others here in the forum came to a decision whether or not to have children. Did you talk to a genetic counselor? Did you consider prenatal diagnostics? Would be happy to hear your thoughts.

Also, it would be great if someone could recommend a medical expert in this field that I could talk to? Most doctors I've talked to are just very uninformed about the (potential) causes and effects of FML or multiple lipomas in general and therefore not very helpful.

Many thanks in advance.

You should not even let that cross your thoughts again!

My father has two .. but I have probably 100+ now ... maybe if I really count I could be on guiness book of records :) My sister has none! I don't know of any cousin or uncles who have it!

If unfortunately your kids get it .. teach them not be bothered about it.

I have always remained strong and haven't let these bother me or my family (my mother though is always worried).
